The Corbett National Park is a heritage property today for the entire country but its history is very interesting. Till 1820, the area known as Jim Corbett Park was the private property of the local rulers till these were taken over by the British Raj and the ownership exchanged hands. It was only in 1858 that plans were drawn up to protect the forests that were declared reserved in 1879. Jim Corbett at the age of eight started his display of hunting prowess in 1884 till in 1910 he ultimately gave up killing animals and became a wildlife enthusiast. The park was declared a national park in 1934 but it was only in 1957 after the death of Jim Corbett that the park was renamed Corbett National Park in order to honor his memory. Corbett National Park has rare trees that include sal and Sheesham besides 50 different species of animals and more than 500 birds and at least twenty five different species of reptiles.
